Changan UK launches Deepal S05 – An innovative all-electric compact crossover SUV

Birmingham - Changan UK has officially launched the Deepal S05, an innovative all-electric compact crossover SUV that brings together premium design, intelligent technology and everyday practicality in the UK’s popular C-SUV segment.

The latest addition to Changan’s growing UK EV line-up, the five-door Deepal S05 has been built from a blend of European styling, UK engineering expertise and globally renowned advanced electric vehicle technology, complete with premium specification, at an accessible price of £37,990 (MRRP).

Designed to perform with an equal measure of precision and power, whether on city streets, country roads or longer motorway journeys, the Deepal S05 delivers a refined and confident driving experience with zero emissions.

Powertrain options

Offering drivers a compelling new electric C-SUV option to suit all needs, the Deepal S05 is available in two model variants, both coming in a single, well equipped trim level.

A rear-wheel drive (RWD) version is powered by a synchronous motor delivering 200kW and 290Nm of torque, achieving 0-62mph acceleration in 7.5 seconds. The all-wheel drive (AWD) variant adds an asynchronous front motor, increasing total output to 320kW and 502Nm of torque, and reducing the 0-62mph acceleration to just 5.5 seconds, with both models sharing a top speed of 112mph.

Powering both versions is a 68.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a WLTP range of up to 303 miles (RWD) and 278 miles (AWD). The use of LFP battery enhances durability, thermal stability and sustainability, while Changan’s advanced battery management system maintains strong performance even in cold conditions.

Energy efficiency has been optimised, with consumption figures as low as 15.9kWh/100km for the RWD model. The battery supports DC fast charging at up to 200kW, enabling a 30-80% charge in just 15 minutes, while AC charging is supported at up to 11kW. A Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows the Deepal S05 to supply up to 6kW of power to external devices, enhancing its everyday versatility.

European design

Styled at Changan’s European design centre in Turin, Italy, the Deepal S05 features a sculpted, elegant, and aerodynamic exterior with a drag coefficient of just 0.25Cd, contributing to improved efficiency and range. Its aircraft-inspired design language combines distinctive Changan Deepal features such as frameless doors, flush door handles, and full-width LED lighting.

The Deepal S05 presents a low, sporty stance accentuated by a forward-leaning D-pillar, muscular wheel arches and a layered body profile that conveys both strength and momentum. The side profile features a double waistline intended to mimic the aerodynamic silhouette of an aircraft fuselage. At the front, slim, eye-like LED daytime running lights and aircraft-inspired headlights and a front bumper designed to evoke the shape of aeroplane wings create a distinctive and modern, ‘flying wing’ aesthetic. At the rear, a full-width LED taillight design derived from the shape of spacecraft wings and illuminated Deepal logo enhance visibility and presence, complemented by a high-mounted V-shaped spoiler with integrated brake light and an aero-optimised bumper diffuser.

Interior excellence

The interior of the Deepal S05 offers a calm, spacious and highly refined cabin. A smart wraparound ‘flight cabin’ design places the driver at the centre of an intuitive layout that includes a steering wheel modelled after aircraft controls, and a large, augmented reality Heads-Up Display (AR-HUD) – a technology originally developed for fighter jets to keep the pilot's eyes on the horizon.

Premium soft-touch materials and vegan leather seating enhance comfort. Heated and ventilated front seats come as standard and have been developed using anthropometric data to provide exceptional support and comfort. The front passenger co-pilot seat features a ‘zero gravity’ reclining function with extendable leg rest. Inspired by the neutral body posture astronauts adopt in space to reduce pressure on joints, the seat is designed to transform long journeys into a more relaxing experience. The Deepal S05’s layout balances advanced digital technology with intuitive physical controls, retaining dedicated switchgear for frequently used functions such as the wipers, ensuring key actions remain simple, tactile and distraction-free.

Advanced technology and connectivity

Technology is a standout feature of the Deepal S05. A 15.4-inch central control high-definition touchscreen forms the hub of the infotainment system and can be angled away or towards the driver to reduce glare. This is paired with the 50-inch projected area augmented reality head-up display, intelligent multi-zone voice control, gesture recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a premium 14-speaker audio system for an immersive sound experience.

Practical, safe, and engineered for the UK

The Deepal S05 features generous room with a 492-litre boot or 1,250 litres with flat-folded seats, plus a large 159-litre front trunk, and numerous smart storage solutions throughout the cabin.

Safety is a vital cornerstone of the Deepal S05’s development. The vehicle has been awarded the highest possible, five-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring particularly highly for adult and child occupant protection. As standard, it is equipped with 17 intelligent driver assistance systems, enabling Level 2 autonomous driving, supported by a network of cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors, including a 540-degree surround-view camera system.

Engineered with input from the Changan UK R&D Centre in Birmingham, the Deepal S05 has been tuned specifically for UK roads, ensuring confident handling, comfort and refined dynamics across a wide range of driving conditions.

The Changan Deepal S05 for the UK market will be produced in Thailand following the establishment of the company’s manufacturing facility in 2023. Changan has developed strong production expertise in RHD vehicle production, supported by local expertise and a reputation for high-quality parts and manufacturing standards.

The Thailand facility is focused on serving global RHD markets, ensuring consistent quality, testing and supply. Its location also enables efficient and flexible logistics to these markets. With approximately 60% of components sourced locally, the facility strengthens Changan’s supply chain and localisation footprint.

Pricing and availability

The Deepal S05 is priced at £37,990 for the RWD model and £39,990 for the AWD version. Each model is offered in a single trim level, with no compromise on safety, comfort or technology. Optional extras include a panoramic roof with electric sunshade and a manually detachable tow bar allowing towing of up to 1,600kg, adding to its everyday versatility.

Available now through an expanding UK dealer network of over 40 sites, with plans to reach 60 dealers by the end of March 2026, the Deepal S05 is supported by a seven-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty, offering long-term confidence and peace of mind.
